Thrangu Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yushu, China
Thrangu Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yushu, located in the mountainous region of Qinghai province. The complex spans different elevations and contains spaces for meditation, teaching, and religious ceremonies.
The monastery was founded in the 12th century and developed into a significant center of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Following an earthquake in the early 21st century, it was reconstructed at a new location.
The monastery displays traditional Tibetan architectural style with gilded Buddha figures and colorful wall paintings that tell religious stories. Visitors can observe how these artworks remain central to the daily spiritual practice of the monastic community living here.
The site sits in a mountainous area, so visitors should expect different elevations and varied pathways. The best time to visit is during the drier months when the terrain is more accessible.
Eight stone monuments line the approach to the monastery, marking the landscape and emphasizing the spiritual character of the place. The surrounding area also features ancient rock carvings in Tibetan and Chinese script that have endured for decades.
