Palpung Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Dêgê, China

Palpung Monastery is a Buddhist complex spread across a steep mountain platform in Sichuan Province, with numerous buildings, prayer halls, and monk dormitories built into the landscape. The structures are arranged across different elevations following the natural slopes of the terrain.

The monastery was founded in 1727 as a collaborative effort between a prominent Buddhist spiritual leader and a local ruler to establish a major Buddhist learning center. This founding set the foundation for its role as one of the most significant monastic institutions in Tibetan Buddhism.

The monastery functions as a center where Buddhist monks study and practice their faith through daily rituals and meditation. You can observe how the community organizes its life around prayer halls and teaching spaces.

The site sits at high altitude where weather can change quickly, so wear layers and bring sun protection. Plan to spend roughly half a day for a complete visit including travel from nearby towns.

The monastery contains retreat centers designed for advanced meditation practices, which were groundbreaking innovations when they were first built in Tibet. These secluded facilities allow monks to engage in extended periods of focused study away from the main complex.
