Kalamaili Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Xinjiang, China
Kalamaili Nature Reserve covers a large plateau between the Ulungur River and the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains. It is home to Mongolian wild ass, goitered gazelle, Eurasian wolf, red fox, and around 100 Przewalski's horses living in their natural habitat.
The area became protected in 1982 and gained state-level status in 2019. This recognition reflects the importance of the region for conserving endangered species in China.
Kazakh herders use this land as winter pasture, moving livestock down from higher areas during the coldest months. This practice shapes how the landscape is used and shows a long tradition of living alongside wildlife.
Access is limited because this is a delicate nature reserve and visits typically need approval from local authorities. The best time to visit is during warmer months when roads are passable and wildlife is most active.
Around 27 Przewalski's horses were reintroduced here in the 2000s, a rare breed that nearly disappeared forever. The population grew to over 100 animals, showing how important such efforts are for saving endangered species.
