King Yin Lei, Historic mansion in Wan Chai District, Hong Kong.
King Yin Lei is a mansion in Wan Chai District, Hong Kong, located above Happy Valley Racecourse. Several pavilions with red brick walls and green roof tiles are spread across the grounds, connected by courtyards and pathways.
The estate was built between 1936 and 1937 to designs by architect A. R. Fenton-Raven for a wealthy family. A comprehensive restoration in 2010 brought the building back to its original condition, with many tiles sourced from Guangdong Province.
The curved roofs with green glazed tiles follow traditional southern Chinese building forms, while the structure beneath shows Western construction techniques. This mix reflects how wealthy families in the 1930s brought both worlds together in their living spaces.
The mansion sits at 45 Stubbs Road and is accessible through public tours organized by the government throughout the year. Visitors should book in advance as places are limited and tours run only on certain days.
The Tianda Institute runs a learning center here focused on Chinese culture and environmental topics. The rooms now serve workshops and educational programs rather than as a residence.
