Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant, Traditional restaurant in City God Temple area, Shanghai, China
Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant is a three-floor dining venue located near the City God Temple in Shanghai, specializing in handmade xiaolongbao, small steamed dumplings with thin wrappers and a pork broth filling. Each floor offers a different level of service, from quick counter-style eating on the ground floor to more comfortable seating on the upper levels.
The restaurant opened in 1900 near the City God Temple and is one of the oldest eating places still operating in Shanghai. After 1949 it came under state ownership, which shaped how it was managed for much of the following decades.
Xiaolongbao are a central part of Shanghai's food identity, and this restaurant is one of the most visited places to try them. Watching the cooks fold the thin dough at the counter is something many visitors stop to observe before sitting down.
Queues can get long during lunch and dinner hours, so arriving a little before or after the main rush helps. The lower floor moves faster with counter service, while the upper floors offer a slower, more relaxed meal.
The restaurant offers an oversized version of the steamed dumpling that is eaten with a straw, so diners can drink the hot broth inside before eating the dough. This is different from the small dumplings served elsewhere and catches many first-time visitors off guard.
