Aurora Plaza, Modern skyscraper in Xuhui District, Shanghai, China
Aurora Plaza is a glass and steel skyscraper in Xuhui District, Shanghai, designed by the Japanese firm Nikken Sekkei and rising to about 165 meters at the corner of Huaihai Road and Shaanxi Road. The tower holds office floors in its upper section and retail spaces at street level and the lower floors.
The tower was completed in the early 2000s, during a period when Shanghai was reshaping its skyline with a wave of new commercial construction in the city center. It was developed by the Aurora Group, a Taiwan-based company that used the project to establish a stronger foothold on the Chinese mainland.
The name Aurora comes from the Latin word for dawn, which fits the way the glass facade catches the morning light. The building sits along Huaihai Road, one of Shanghai's most frequented shopping streets, making it a natural landmark for people moving through the district.
The building is next to Shaanxi Road South metro station, so it is easy to reach by subway from most parts of the city. The retail floors are open to the public, while the office levels require access through the building's separate entrances.
The building features a large LED screen on its exterior that was among the first of its kind in this part of Shanghai and became a reference point at the intersection. It was also one of the early examples in the city of a Japanese architect designing a tower for a Taiwanese developer on the Chinese mainland.
