Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Public aquarium in Lujiazui, Shanghai, China.

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is a large public aquarium in the Lujiazui area with multiple exhibition zones showing marine life from different regions worldwide. The facility displays various aquatic species in specialized habitats designed to reflect their natural environments.

The aquarium opened in 2002 as one of Shanghai's first major marine research facilities. Since then, it has played an important role in protecting endangered species, particularly the Chinese sturgeon.

The China Zone presents the aquatic life of the Yangtze River system, showing visitors how local species have adapted to river environments. This section helps people understand the water ecosystems that have long been part of the region's landscape.

The aquarium is easily reached via the Lujiazui Metro Station and located within walking distance of major transportation hubs. Plan to spend several hours exploring all the different zones comfortably.

A glass tunnel submerged underwater allows visitors to walk through marine environments and observe creatures swimming all around them. This walkway creates an unusual perspective where fish and larger animals pass close by overhead.

Marine museums worldwide

Marine museums present the history of seafaring, scientific exploration of the oceans, and the diversity of marine life. These institutions display ship models, nautical instruments, aquariums with living sea creatures, and exhibitions about oceanography. Visitors learn about historical voyages of discovery, modern ocean research, and the protection of marine ecosystems. Notable examples include the Oceanogràfic in Valencia with its various marine biotopes, the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam with its collection on Dutch naval history, and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, founded in 1910. The Maritime Museum of San Diego preserves historic vessels, while the Museum of Oceanography in Sopot documents Baltic Sea research. These museums combine scientific education with the fascination for seas and oceans.

Shanghai guide to historical and modern landmarks

Shanghai brings together the past and the present in a single city. The Bund lines up colonial facades from the 1920s and 1930s directly across from the Lujiazui skyline, where glass towers rise on the opposite bank of the river. In the narrow lanes of the French Concession, old plane trees shade historic townhouses while just a few blocks away the new city center climbs with office towers and shopping malls. This mix defines the whole cityscape. The city preserves its religious and cultural roots in active temples such as Longhua and Jing'an, which stand in the middle of modern neighborhoods. The Ming Dynasty Yu Garden remains surrounded by traditional teahouses even as contemporary shops have grown up around it. Water towns like Zhujiajiao and Qibao sit on the outskirts and show how life looked centuries ago in the region. Museums such as the Shanghai Museum and the China Art Museum collect art and history from different eras. For families there are the Ocean Aquarium, Shanghai Disneyland, and the Science and Technology Museum. Places like Tianzifang, M50 Creative Park, and Duolun Road reveal contemporary cultural life in converted old buildings. Each neighborhood has its own character, from the wide boulevards at People's Square to the small workshops along old industrial structures like 1933 Old Millfun.
