Shanghai World Financial Center, Skyscraper in Pudong, Shanghai, China
The Shanghai World Financial Center is a 474-meter neo-futurist skyscraper in Pudong, Shanghai, recognizable by a trapezoid opening at the top. The structure consists of several segments with observation decks, office spaces, and hotel rooms distributed across its full height.
Construction started in 1997 and was interrupted during the Asian crisis before the tower was completed in 2008. At its opening, it ranked among the tallest buildings on Earth.
The name refers to the global business world and reflects the international focus of the tower. In the lower floors, residents and visitors shop in upscale stores, while the upper levels serve exclusively as offices and hotel space.
You can reach the tower through Lujiazui Station on Line 2 and then visit the observation platforms on different floors. The best views appear during clear weather and outside peak visiting times.
The steel frame rests on over 2000 piles driven deep into the ground to provide stability. Heavy weights in the upper section serve to reduce movement caused by wind.
