Swallow Rock, Natural landmark in Jiangsu Province, China
Swallow Rock is a natural rock formation on the bank of the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, China, rising sharply above the water. It sits at the edge of the river and offers an open view across the wide channel and the land on either side.
The formation was used as a lookout point for centuries, since it commands a clear view of river traffic on the Yangtze. Over time its position along this major route drew merchants and travelers, gradually turning it into a known stop along the river.
The name Swallow Rock comes directly from the swallows that nest in the cliff's natural hollows each spring. Locals have long tied the return of the birds to the start of warmer weather, making the site a seasonal marker in everyday life.
The site is easy to reach from Nanjing and works well as a day trip. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable conditions for a visit, and going early in the morning means fewer people at the rock itself.
The swallows that gave the rock its name nest inside the natural hollows of the cliff face and return to the same spots year after year. This regularity made the rock a kind of natural calendar for the communities living along this stretch of the river.
