Tomb of Li Wenzhong, Ming Dynasty tomb in Zhongshan Mountain, Jiangsu, China
The Tomb of Li Wenzhong sits on Zhongshan Mountain in Jiangsu and contains carefully carved stone work, ceremonial gates, and a memorial stone mounted on a tortoise that records his achievements. Throughout the site, ornate elements structure the ceremonial path from the entrance to the main burial area.
Li Wenzhong was a nephew of the Ming Dynasty founder and served as a general and leader of a major educational institution before his death in 1383. His tomb was built soon after his passing and reflects his important role in early Ming government.
The burial site follows traditional Chinese principles for high-ranking tombs, with stone figures lining the path that show visitors the importance of the person buried here.
The site sits on a hillside, so visitors should expect slopes and uneven paths throughout the grounds. Good footwear and allowing enough time to explore the area thoroughly are important considerations.
Along the sacred path stands an unfinished horse sculpture that bears witness to the hurried burial after the general's sudden death. This incomplete work quietly speaks to the political circumstances of that time.
