Ulanbay Gucheng

Ulanbay Gucheng is an ancient fortified settlement near Ürümqi featuring two distinct sections separated by space. The preserved walls reach up to 4 meters high and the entire site spans roughly 480 meters east to west and 550 meters north to south.

The site became known to scholars following systematic archaeological excavations in 1983. The discoveries revealed continuous habitation spanning from the Tang through the Yuan dynasty periods.

The town's division into northern and southern zones reveals distinct building styles from different periods in the region. Walking through the remains, you notice how various peoples shaped the structures with their own construction methods and design preferences.

The site is accessible by public buses from central city stations and entry is affordable for most visitors. The grounds are easy to navigate and a visit can be completed in a couple of hours without much difficulty.

The area surrounding the nearby Wulabo Reservoir contains numerous ancient tombs revealing advanced craftsmanship from the region's past. Items like gold jewelry and bronze mirrors discovered there show that inhabitants possessed considerable artistic and technical skills.
