Nanfang Building, Commercial high-rise building in Liwan District, Guangzhou, China

The Nanfang Building is a 12-storey reinforced-concrete tower on the Pearl River waterfront at Yanjiang West Road in Liwan District, Guangzhou. Completed in 1922, it rises 50 m, with a tower section above the tenth floor. It has housed department stores, offices, electronics markets and hotels.

The building was completed in 1922 and held the title of China's tallest structure at that time. This achievement shows how quickly Guangzhou developed as a modern center.

The name comes from the Daxin department store, whose English name "The Sun" was rendered in Cantonese as "Daxin", meaning "great new plans". The building later became a state-run store and was renamed Nanfang in 1973. It was designated a China Time-honoured Brand in 1993.

The Nanfang Building stands on Yanjiang West Road along the Pearl River in Liwan, not in Tianhe. It is a City-level Heritage Protection Unit (1999) and now houses an electronics and digital parts wholesale market, so expect crowded trading floors rather than tourist facilities. The building is in the old city, where traffic is congested and parking scarce.

The building's name changed with the political eras: it opened in 1954 as the Xidi Department Store, was renamed the People's Department Store in the early Cultural Revolution, and took the name Nanfang Building in 1973. In 1986 it housed mainland China's first 24-hour convenience store, on Xihao Erma Road.
