四方炮台

四方炮台, Military fortification in Guangzhou, China

The Sifang Battery is a fortified structure on the banks of the Pearl River, built with solid stone walls and multiple defensive levels. The site features raised platforms where cannons could be aimed at vessels approaching from the water.

The fortification was built during the Qing Dynasty as part of a coastal defense system meant to protect the city from attacks at sea. It served its purpose during the turbulent maritime conflicts of the 1800s.

The site shows how defenders once organized their weapons to control access from the water. Stone walls and gun positions follow patterns that were common in Chinese military design of the period.

The site is easily reached on foot by walking from Huangsha Station along the riverside path. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven and there are steps needed to climb the raised platforms.

The cannons were arranged on platforms at different heights to hit ships at varying distances from the water. This layered setup shows a practical approach to controlling the broad river.
