Shui Chuen O, Mountain in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong.
Shui Chuen O is a mountain peak in the New Territories of Hong Kong, sitting between Lion Rock Country Park and Ma On Shan Country Park. It belongs to Sha Tin District and is flanked on all sides by large housing estates that have grown around its base over recent decades.
The peak was part of a rural and largely open landscape in the New Territories until the second half of the 20th century. From the 1980s onward, Hong Kong's rapid expansion brought large housing estates to the land around it.
The name Shui Chuen O comes from Cantonese and refers to the water springs that once fed the valley below the peak. Walking through the area today, this name feels like a quiet trace of the landscape that existed before the housing blocks arrived.
The area is well served by the MTR network, and several bus routes connect the surrounding housing estates to the rest of the district. Since the surroundings are heavily built up, hiking trails often pass through residential zones before reaching open land.
English speakers sometimes call the peak Sugar Loaf Peak, a name with no official standing in Hong Kong. The nickname likely comes from the shape of the summit, which resembles a rounded sugar loaf when seen from certain angles.
