Riviera Plaza, vacant shopping mall in Hong Kong
Riviera Plaza is a multi-floor shopping center in the Tsuen Wan District of Hong Kong, with retail shops, restaurants, and service counters spread across its levels. It has a direct connection to the adjacent residential complex Riviera Gardens, and parking is available on the lower levels of the building.
Riviera Plaza opened in 1990 and at the time was among the first vertically structured malls of its kind in Hong Kong. In its early years, the building housed the Riviera Theatre, a cinema with around 460 seats that operated for roughly two decades before closing in 2011.
Riviera Plaza works as a daily stop for residents of the adjoining Riviera Gardens complex, who come here for groceries, meals, and everyday errands. The shops and eateries cater clearly to the local crowd, giving the building a grounded, neighborhood feel rather than a tourist one.
The building can be entered from several levels depending on which direction you are coming from, with access points at the basement and the first two floors. Lifts and escalators connect all floors, so moving between levels is straightforward whether you are carrying bags or traveling with children.
The Riviera Theatre inside the building was for decades one of the very few cinemas in the Tsuen Wan area, drawing people from across the district. After it closed in 2011, the space was converted into retail use, and today there is little visible trace of the former cinema inside the mall.
