Zhoukoudian, Archaeological site in Fangshan District, Beijing, China.

Zhoukoudian is an archaeological site in Fangshan, southwest of Beijing, where scientists have uncovered bones, tools, and other objects from prehistoric times. The location sits among limestone hills and valleys where these early people once made their home.

Scientists began digging systematically at this location in 1921 and found remains of early people who lived there roughly 770,000 years ago. These discoveries changed how the world understood human history.

The place is understood today as a memorial to early human life, drawing visitors who want to learn how humans lived long ago. The exhibits show tools and remains that help people understand what daily survival meant in prehistoric times.

The location is reachable by public bus from Beijing, taking roughly an hour and a half to reach. On-site there are museums with exhibits and outdoor areas where excavation sites remain visible.

More than 40 skeletons of early people were found here, making it the largest collection of such fossils in the world. This quantity of remains allowed scientists to understand how these people lived and interacted with one another.
