Luokou Yellow River Railway Bridge, Railway bridge in Shizhong District, Jinan, China.
The Luokou Yellow River Railway Bridge is a steel structure that spans 1,255 meters across the river with 11 supports dividing the crossing into 12 sections. The deck measures about 9.4 meters wide, which allowed trains to pass in both directions simultaneously.
Construction started in October 1909 and was finished in November 1912, with work costing 11.66 million German marks. The bridge became part of the Tianjin-Pukou Railway, one of the earliest major rail routes connecting northern and central China.
The name Luokou refers to an old ferry station that once operated at this crossing point. Visitors walking across today can sense how this bridge continues a centuries-old tradition of connecting communities separated by the river.
You can walk across the bridge and view the structure from the riverside paths below. The best perspective comes from ground level along the banks, where you can see the full span without train traffic interfering with your visit.
The bridge survived multiple attacks during armed conflicts, including an explosion targeting its eighth pillar in 1928. This attack, carried out during turbulent power struggles in China, left visible marks on the structure that remain noticeable today.
