Sunway TaihuLight, Supercomputing center in Wuxi, China
Sunway TaihuLight is a supercomputing center in Wuxi, Jiangsu, that houses 40,960 SW26010 processors for high-performance calculation work. The machine operates using more than ten million computing cores that process complex tasks simultaneously.
The system began running in June 2016 and held the title of fastest computer worldwide until June 2018. The National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering led the development with locally manufactured components.
The facility relies on processors designed and manufactured entirely within the country, built without licensed foreign chip architectures. Visitors can observe how this approach has shaped research labs and engineering workspaces throughout the surrounding region.
The facility is an active research installation used mainly for scientific projects and not designed for public tours. Researchers work here on climate simulations, materials science, pharmaceutical studies, and engineering calculations for industrial applications.
The installation achieves a processing speed of 93 petaflops while consuming comparatively little energy. Its efficiency stands at 6.1 gigaflops per watt, which is unusual for systems of this performance level.
