Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis

The Ennepe-Ruhr district encompasses nine municipalities across 408 square kilometers of land between the Ruhr and Ennepe river valleys.

Established in 1929, the district merged the former Schwelm district with portions of Hattingen and Hagen districts, later incorporating Witten in 1975.

Each of the nine municipalities within the district maintains status as a town, with Schwelm serving as the administrative capital.

The district connects to major urban centers through the A1 motorway between Cologne and Dortmund, and the A43 from Wuppertal to Bochum.

The district coat of arms displays red and white checks representing the County of Mark, with wavy lines symbolizing the Ruhr and Ennepe rivers.
