Ratekau, Historical field stone church in Ratekau, Germany
The Vicelinkirche is a Romanesque field stone building with a nave, choir, and round defensive tower. The tower rises roughly 48 meters and shapes the village silhouette.
Construction began in 1156 after the region came under Christian rule. Vizelin, a missionary, played an important role in spreading the faith among the Slavic population.
The church shows the building styles that took hold in the region after Christianity arrived. It was built with field stones that craftspeople gathered from the surrounding area at the time.
The church serves as a gathering place for the local Lutheran community and welcomes visitors on regular occasions. Contacting the parish in advance helps ensure you can explore the interior when visiting.
The church tower holds five bells, with the newest cast in 1925. Four older bells were removed during World War II and have not been seen since.
