Marzahn, Residential district in eastern Berlin, Germany
Marzahn is a residential area in eastern Berlin within the borough of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, encompassing multi-story apartment buildings, shopping centers, and green spaces. Streets run through wide avenues lined with typical prefabricated housing blocks, while parks and small lakes create open space here and there.
The medieval village of Morczane first appeared in records in 1300 and remained a small farming settlement on the edge of Berlin for centuries. In the 1970s, the East German government began building a massive prefabricated housing estate designed to accommodate tens of thousands of people, fundamentally transforming the area.
The Gardens of the World attract visitors with replicas of Asian and European garden styles, showing how eastern philosophy and western design meet. Families come here for walks and picnics, while the extensive grounds offer a quiet contrast to the dense development all around.
The S-Bahn lines S7 and S75 connect the area to central Berlin, while trams M6 and M8 serve local destinations. Visitors arriving by car will find parking at the large shopping centers, and pedestrian paths run through the housing estates in all directions.
The prefabricated housing development here was the largest of its kind in East Germany and absorbed over one hundred thousand residents within a few years. Today, many of the blocks display colorful facades, having been comprehensively renovated and redesigned after reunification.
