East Attica Regional Unit, Administrative region in Attica, Greece
East Attica Regional Unit extends across 1,513 square kilometers of land, encompassing thirteen municipalities from Acharnes in the north to Lavreotiki in the south.
The regional unit formation occurred in 1987 during Greece's administrative reform, replacing the previous prefecture system to establish more localized governance structures.
The municipalities within East Attica preserve numerous archaeological sites, ancient temples, and traditional settlements that reflect the continuous habitation since classical times.
The region contains major transportation hubs, including access to Athens International Airport through Spata-Artemida municipality and ferry connections from Rafina port.
Marathon municipality in East Attica marks the location of the historic 490 BC battle, which led to the creation of the modern marathon running distance.
