Altis, Sacred precinct in Olympia, Greece
The Altis is a sacred precinct in Olympia bounded by the Kronion hill on one side and protective walls enclosing an irregular four-sided area. The site contains two major temples, numerous smaller shrines, treasury buildings, and structures that once served the administration of the ancient Olympic Games.
The precinct developed over centuries, with its two main temples constructed during the Classical period to emphasize Olympia's religious importance. The site became a center for religious and athletic activities that drew thousands of visitors from across the Greek world.
The sacred precinct held two major temples honoring Zeus and Hera, reflecting how central this site was to the ancient world's spiritual life. City-states from across Greece built treasury buildings around the temples to demonstrate their devotion and wealth.
The best way to explore the site is to walk slowly through it and observe the building foundations and how structures relate to each other spatially. The slope of the Kronion hill offers good vantage points from which you can understand the overall layout and arrangement of the remains.
Inside the main temple stood a colossal gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the largest statues of the ancient world. This statue was so famous that people from distant lands traveled to Olympia just to see it.
