Gorge d’Enfer

Gorge d’Enfer, archaeological site in France

The Gorge d'Enfer is an archaeological site in the Perigord region near the Vezere River, known for its ancient rock shelters and caves from the Aurignacian period. The steep cliffs feature natural fissures and alcoves, some enlarged by human activity, that preserve evidence of early occupation and daily life.

The site was explored in the 1860s by Edouard Lartet and Henry Christy, who discovered evidence of human occupation dating to the Paleolithic period. This region became crucial for understanding early human settlement in Europe and remains an important research location.

The site served as shelter for early humans who adapted to this rocky landscape. The rock formations and natural cavities reveal how ancient people organized their lives around the natural features of the gorge.

Sturdy footwear is essential due to uneven rocky terrain and narrow passages between rocks that can be difficult to navigate. Visiting with a local guide is recommended to safely explore the site and gain deeper understanding of its archaeological features.

A deep natural basin about 3 feet in diameter lies within the rock fissure, and some 400 meters away a powerful spring gushes from the stone itself. This hidden water system reveals how early humans accessed and used water in this rocky environment.
