Domaine du Tourmalet, Ski resort in the Hautes-Pyrénées, France.

Grand Tourmalet is a ski resort in the Hautes-Pyrénées that connects two separate stations, Barèges and La Mongie, across numerous slopes ranging from 1,400 to 2,500 meters in elevation. The area offers a range of runs and direct access to Pic du Midi, from which skiers can descend through untouched snow fields.

Barèges and La Mongie were originally two separate ski areas until they were unified into a single domain in 1973, marking a major milestone in French winter sports development. This merger created a larger and more diverse skiing territory for visitors.

The Col du Tourmalet pass is a legendary mountain crossing that features regularly in the Tour de France, holding deep meaning for French cycling fans. Skiers traveling through this same pass feel the echo of that sporting heritage in the landscape.

The domain operates several ski lifts and uses snow cannons to maintain good conditions throughout the winter. Visitors should arrive early during peak season and be prepared to adjust which slopes they ski, as certain areas may be more or less accessible depending on weather and snow conditions.

Visitors can ascend to the Pic du Midi observatory at 2,877 meters and descend directly through untouched snow fields from there. This chance to start a run from a working observatory before skiing down is a rare experience in mountain resorts across Europe.
