Pic de Bastan, Granite summit in Hautes-Pyrénées, France
Pic de Bastan is a granite summit rising to approximately 2715 meters in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Several alpine lakes dot the slopes and surrounding valleys of this mountain, which sits within the Néouvielle range shaped by glaciation.
The name Bastan derives from the Basque word Baztan, meaning mountain river, reflecting the ancient linguistic presence of Basque culture in the French Pyrenees. This regional identity has persisted through centuries of settlement in these high valleys.
Local shepherds maintain their traditional transhumance practices around Pic de Bastan during the summer months.
The ascent begins at Col de Portet at approximately 2215 meters, with several trails offering different levels of difficulty to reach the summit. The best visiting season is during warmer months when snow and ice do not obstruct the paths.
From the various trails, hikers can spot marmots on rocky slopes and observe vultures soaring over the ridges. These wildlife encounters happen regularly and add an element of natural observation to the climb.
