La Meije Pic Oriental, Alpine summit in Massif des Écrins, France
La Meije Pic Oriental is an Alpine peak in the Massif des Écrins near La Grave, standing at 3,816 meters. It forms part of a five-summit ridge with steep rock faces and glaciated northern slopes that dominate the landscape.
The peak belongs to the La Meije mountain system that has drawn climbers from across Europe since the mid-1800s. The first complete traverse of the entire summit ridge occurred in July 1885.
The peak represents a significant destination for French mountaineering, attracting climbers who seek to master advanced Alpine techniques.
Climbing routes to the summit can be accessed from two refuges: Refuge du Promontoire at 3,082 meters and Refuge de l'Aigle at 3,450 meters. Summer offers the best conditions, when snow melt makes passages more navigable and safer.
The peak's northern face hosts three major glaciers: Glacier de l'Homme, Glacier du Tabuchet, and Glacier de la Meije. These ice formations shape the mountain's appearance and offer specialized climbing opportunities.
