La Grande Torche, Alpine summit in La Clusaz, France

La Grande Torche is a summit in the Bornes-Aravis massif with steep rocky ridges and exposed sections throughout its upper reaches. The terrain combines jagged peaks with sections requiring careful climbing skills to navigate safely.

The first documented climbing routes to the summit were established in the early 1900s when mountaineers began exploring this area more systematically. These early expeditions formed the basis for how people approach climbing this peak today.

Shepherds have grazed animals on these slopes for generations, following seasonal patterns that shaped how people lived in the mountains. You can still see stone structures and cleared areas that reflect this traditional way of life.

You need good fitness and mountaineering experience before attempting this climb. Weather conditions can change rapidly at altitude, so check forecasts beforehand and bring proper gear for exposed terrain.

The north ridge contains unusually fragile rock formations that present technical climbing challenges for experienced mountaineers. These geological characteristics make this approach notably more demanding than other routes to the summit.
