Krubera Cave, Solutional cave in Arabika Massif, Georgia
The cave system extends through limestone formations with vertical shafts and meandering passages reaching a total depth of 2,199 meters below ground level.
Georgian geographers discovered the cave in 1960 and named it after Alexander Kruber, a researcher who conducted geological studies in the Caucasus region.
The cave system represents a paramount destination for speleologists worldwide, contributing greatly to the understanding of deep underground cave formations.
The cave entrance stays accessible only four months per year due to weather conditions, and explorers need technical equipment for vertical progression.
Scientists have documented twelve species of arthropods that exist exclusively within this cave system, adapting to life at extreme underground depths.
