Заповедники Абхазии, Nature reserves in Republic of Abkhazia, Georgia.
The Nature Reserves of Abkhazia are a group of protected areas along the southern slopes of the Caucasus, within the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia in Georgia. They cover dense forests, mountain lakes, and waterfalls across a wide range of elevations.
The Pitsunda-Musser Reserve was set up in the 19th century to protect ancient tree species that had survived the ice age. Further reserves were added through the 20th century as conservation efforts in the Caucasus grew.
Some of the reserves contain old shrines that local communities still use for traditional rituals today. These sites sit deep inside the forests and can only be reached on foot along narrow trails.
Access conditions vary a lot by season, with spring through autumn generally offering better conditions for a visit. Sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing are essential for moving through the forested mountain areas.
The forests of the Pitsunda-Musser Reserve are among the few places where relic tree species from before the ice age still grow in their original form. The Caucasian tur, a wild goat found only in the Caucasus, lives within these reserves and is rarely spotted even by experienced walkers.
