Snowcave

Snowcave is a cave system in the Abkhazia region with multiple levels, underground lakes, waterfalls, and steep vertical shafts within limestone formations. The interior contains diverse geological structures that developed over thousands of years.

Soviet researchers began systematic exploration in the 1960s and created the first detailed maps of the cave's structure. These early studies established the foundation for all subsequent research and expeditions.

The cave draws the attention of local mountaineers and researchers who study its passages and formations regularly. These visitors have helped make it an important place for learning about underground geology in the region.

Visitors need specialized equipment such as ropes, harnesses, and thermal protection, as temperatures stay near freezing year-round. Without proper preparation and gear, exploration cannot be done safely.

Several chambers in the cave system contain ice layers that persist even during warmer seasons and do not thaw. These permanent ice formations result from the extreme cold of the deepest cave areas.
