Bálna, Commercial and cultural complex in Ferencváros, Hungary
Bálna is a building complex along the Danube River in Budapest that wraps modern glass elements around four historical brick warehouses. The site contains shops, restaurants, the New Budapest Gallery for contemporary art, and outdoor terraces with river views.
The four brick warehouses date from the late 1800s and originally stored goods along the riverbank. The entire complex reopened in 2013 after major renovation as a modern commercial and cultural center.
The name Bálna comes from the Hungarian word for whale, reflecting the building's curved form that seems to embrace the river. Visitors can explore contemporary art in the New Budapest Gallery while noticing how the old brick walls work alongside the new glass envelope.
The site is open daily and accessible to visitors throughout the week, with different areas to explore at your own pace. Seating areas with river views offer comfortable spots to rest between shopping, dining, and gallery browsing.
Dutch architect Kas Oosterhuis intentionally designed the structure to resemble a whale, using curved glass panels to create a distinctive shape along the riverbank. This animal reference appears in both the building's name and its visible outline.
