Galyatető, Mountain resort quarter in Mátraszentimre, Hungary.
Galyatető is a mountain resort area in the Mátra Mountains at roughly 964 meters elevation. The quarter offers multiple types of lodging, from dormitory spaces to four-star rooms, along with dining options and access to numerous trails through the surrounding landscape.
Development of the area began in 1894 with construction of a log cabin called Samassa menedékház, established by the Mátra Society. This initial shelter marked the start of organized tourism in the location more than a century ago.
In 1942, composer Zoltán Kodály created his church work Missa brevis while staying at Galyatető, using the harmonium that remains in the local chapel.
The location is easy to explore on foot, with many trails of varying difficulty winding through forests and over ridge lines. Spring through autumn offers the best conditions for walking, when weather is more stable.
Severe ice storms in December 2014 caused significant damage to trees across the area. Following this, European Union funding supported renovation and heightening of the Galya lookout tower to improve views of the mountain landscape.
