Aligarh division, Administrative division in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Aligarh division is an administrative region in the state of Uttar Pradesh, made up of four districts: Aligarh, Etah, Hathras, and Kasganj. It covers a flat, largely agricultural plain in northern India, lying between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
The area was part of the United Provinces under British rule and was reorganized as an administrative division after India gained independence in 1947. Before that, Aligarh itself had been a contested stronghold in the 18th century, changing hands between local rulers and colonial forces.
The Aligarh Muslim University sits at the heart of the division and draws students from across India and beyond, giving the main city a strong academic feel. The streets around the campus are lined with small bookshops and tea stalls that reflect the daily rhythm of a university town.
The four districts are linked by national highways and railway lines, with Aligarh Junction serving as the main rail hub for the region. Traveling between districts is generally straightforward, as buses and shared vehicles run regularly along the main roads.
The city of Aligarh produces a large share of the locks and padlocks sold across India, with much of the work done in small workshops tucked into the older parts of the city. This trade has been passed down through families for generations and is still very much alive today.
