Sangli is a city in Maharashtra state, located on the banks of the Krishna River at an elevation of 557 feet (170 meters). Sugar factories and agricultural businesses shape the cityscape and the local economy of the region.
The settlement grew from a place called Sahagalli and became the capital of the princely state of the same name in 1761. It retained this status until integration into the Indian Union in 1947.
The name derives from Sahagalli, which means six lanes in Marathi, reflecting the original street layout of the settlement. Local residents gather at the Sangameshwar Shiva Temple and smaller shrines for daily prayers and community events throughout the year.
The railway junction connects Pune with Bangalore and offers regular services for travelers in both directions. The nearest airport is about 30 kilometers away near Kolhapur and can be reached by taxi or bus.
The region hosts the largest turmeric trading center in Asia and processes substantial quantities of this spice. Traders from across the continent come here to buy turmeric for export and regional distribution.
