Rairangpur was renamed in 1918 after a nearby fort and has roots extending to the Mughal period in the 16th century. It grew from a small settlement into an important local center, later shaped by mining activity, with some of Asia's earliest iron ore mines located in this area.
Rairangpur earned its nickname 'Bamanghati' from its traditional name 'Brahmin Ghati', referring to its location between two mountain ranges.
