Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Metropolitan area in Maharashtra, India
This metropolitan region stretches along the northern Konkan coast and connects the core city with numerous surrounding satellite towns. The area covers nine municipal corporations and fifteen municipal councils linked by an extensive railway and road network.
The formal metropolitan region emerged through administrative reforms in the 1970s that brought together several districts under a single planning authority. Later expansions added more municipalities to better coordinate growth and infrastructure.
Residents identify themselves by their subregions and use names like Mumbaikar or Thanekar in daily conversation. These local identities remain visible even as commuting patterns and economic ties connect the entire region together.
Travelers move between different subregions by suburban rail lines and intercity buses that often take more than an hour between destinations. It helps to focus on specific districts rather than attempting to explore the entire region in one day.
Navi Mumbai was built as a planned counterpart city on the mainland side to relieve population pressure on the main island. This settlement follows an orthogonal street grid that contrasts sharply with the organic neighborhoods across the bay.
