Sulur Air Force Base, Military air base in Coimbatore, India.
Sulur Air Force Station is a military aerodrome in Coimbatore with a 2,516-meter asphalt runway positioned at 381 meters elevation. The base includes maintenance hangars, repair workshops, an on-site hospital, and dedicated training facilities for armed forces personnel.
The station was established in 1940 as HMS Vairi under British control and functioned as an aircraft repair facility for Southeast Asian wartime operations. Following independence, it transitioned to Indian Air Force command and expanded into a major regional military aviation center.
The base sits within Coimbatore's defense landscape and hosts various military units that work together on daily operations. Personnel from different branches interact here, creating a hub where fighter pilots, technicians, and medical staff collaborate regularly.
The base is not open to the general public as it remains an active military installation with strict security restrictions. Any visits require prior authorization from base authorities and must be accompanied by military personnel.
The Sarang helicopter display team operates from this base performing aerobatic demonstrations using specially modified HAL Dhruv helicopters. This team is one of the few helicopter aerobatics groups performing regularly at international air shows.
