Chopta, Mountain village in Uttarakhand, India
Chopta is a mountain settlement at 2,680 meters within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, facing peaks such as Trishul and Nanda Devi. An unpaved road links the handful of wooden houses and guesthouses scattered among rhododendron forests and alpine meadows.
The settlement grew as a rest point for pilgrims heading to Tungnath temple, which forms part of the five Panch Kedar shrines. In recent decades, simple lodgings have increased to serve trekkers and hikers passing through.
The name Chopta comes from Kumaoni and refers to grassland, pointing to the wide meadows around the settlement. Shepherds bring their flocks here in summer and set up temporary shelters during the grazing season.
The paths to surrounding trekking routes remain most accessible from April through November, while winter snow often blocks access. Warm clothing is necessary even in summer because the elevation keeps temperatures low.
The meadows around the settlement support populations of musk deer grazing in protected zones. In spring, rhododendrons bloom in shades of red and attract numerous Himalayan bird species.
