Godavarikhani, human settlement in Karimnagar district, Telangana, India
Godavarikhani is a city in the Indian state of Telangana situated along the banks of the Godavari River. The city is laid out around coal mines and power stations, with buildings spread throughout and mining operations shaping much of the landscape.
The city grew under British rule as a center for coal mining and resource extraction, initially supplying local industries and small-scale operations. After independence in 1947, the government took control of the mines and established the Singareni Collieries Company Limited in 1949 to expand coal production significantly.
The city takes its name from the Godavari River, which shapes its character and plays an important role in daily life. The local Telugu community celebrates traditional festivals like Dasara and Sankranti with enthusiasm, gathering in open spaces for celebrations that last several days.
The city is connected to major cities by rail and road, with Ramagundam railway station serving as a key junction on routes between different parts of India. Buses regularly connect the place to nearby villages and markets, making exploration and daily travel convenient.
The city operates large underground and open-pit coal mining with areas labeled RG-1, RG-2, and RG-3 extracting coal daily at significant scale. Comedian Thagubothu Ramesh, who became famous in Telugu cinema, hails from this area, showing how the city produces talent beyond its industrial focus.
