Free School Under the Bridge, Educational initiative under metro bridge in East Delhi, India
Free School Under the Bridge is an educational initiative beneath the Yamuna Bank metro bridge where roughly 300 students aged four to fourteen receive instruction. Classes take place under the concrete structure with students sitting on carpet pieces and learning from blackboards painted directly onto the metro depot walls.
The project began in 2009 near the Yamuna River to provide educational access to children in the area. It started with just two students and has grown into an established school serving hundreds of children since then.
The school serves children from families of daily wage workers and domestic helpers who would otherwise have no access to education. Teaching combines core subjects with the reality of this community, creating a space where learning is possible for all.
Classes follow a schedule with morning sessions for boys and afternoon sessions for girls to serve both groups. The school operates with basic materials and blackboards, with students bringing their own mats or sharing available ones.
The founder rejects financial support from organizations to maintain the school's independence from external control. The initiative relies on community contributions and volunteer teachers rather than institutional funding.
