Province of Oristano, Administrative province in western Sardinia, Italy.
The Province of Oristano is an administrative region in western Sardinia that spans roughly 3,000 square kilometers along a coastline facing the Mediterranean. It contains 87 municipalities distributed between the sea and inland marshlands.
The province was created in 1974 from territory previously belonging to Cagliari and Nuoro provinces, inheriting lands that were once ruled by the medieval Kingdom of Arborea until 1420. After that period, the region fell under outside control.
Archaeological sites like Tharros reveal Phoenician heritage, while the Museum of Mont'e Prama displays ancient Nuragic warrior sculptures that tell stories of past civilizations. These places show how different peoples shaped the region over millennia.
The region has direct train connections to other Sardinian cities and offers multiple access points to Mediterranean beaches along its coastline. Visitors can easily move between coastal areas and inland towns.
The territory includes Baradili, the smallest municipality in Sardinia with fewer than 100 residents living there. This tiny community maintains its own identity within the broader region.
