Province of Palermo, Former administrative division in Sicily, Italy
The Provinz Palermo is a metropolitan region in northwestern Sicily that has held this status since 2015, encompassing the main city and its surrounding towns and villages. The land stretches from rocky and sandy coastal areas with fishing towns to inland hills dotted with small settlements, agricultural fields, and protected nature reserves.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological sites at Himera and Solunt showing early settlements, and later underwent transformations under Arab and Norman rule. These periods shaped the region into a significant trade and cultural center that maintained importance through the centuries.
The region shows strong local pride through its everyday practices: morning markets where vendors and neighbors greet each other, community gathering spots in town squares, and celebrations that bring people together throughout the year.
Visitors can explore the region by car, bus, or scooter, though traffic in the main city can be chaotic while roads outside are easier to navigate. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable visiting conditions, as summers become very hot at midday and winters are mild with occasional rain.
The region included Ustica, a volcanic island north of Sicily, recognized for its marine protected areas and archaeological discoveries from ancient times. Divers and history enthusiasts are drawn to this island to explore the clear waters and underwater remains.
