Riserva naturale Foce Sele - Tanagro, Nature reserve near Battipaglia, Italy.
Riserva naturale Foce Sele - Tanagro is a protected area in Campania covering the mouth of the Sele River and part of the Tanagro valley inland. The terrain shifts between reed beds, wetland meadows, coastal dunes, and a pine forest strip running along the shore.
The pine forest along the coast was planted in the 1930s to shield farmland from the salt carried by sea winds. Decades later, the broader area around the Sele mouth and Tanagro valley was recognized for its natural value and formally protected.
The reserve sits where the Sele River meets the sea, and this transition between freshwater and saltwater draws many migratory bird species that stop here to feed and rest. Visitors walking the paths near the river mouth can watch birds at close range during migration season.
The reserve is reached by marked paths that cross different types of terrain, so wearing sturdy shoes is advisable. Spring and autumn are the most rewarding times to visit, as bird activity along the coast and river mouth is at its peak during those seasons.
The wooded sections of the reserve, particularly along the Tanagro inland, are home to white truffle, a prized underground fungus hunted with trained dogs. This tradition of truffle hunting is still practiced in the area and links the reserve to the local food culture of the surrounding villages.
