Rifugio Coca, Mountain hut in Valbondione, Italy.
Rifugio Coca is a mountain hut in Valbondione, in the Bergamo Alps, sitting at around 1900 meters next to Coca Lake. It has several rooms and shared bathrooms with showers, offering overnight stays for hikers and climbers passing through the area.
Rifugio Coca was founded in 1919 as a shelter for mountaineers and shepherds working in this remote part of the Alps. Its establishment shortly after the First World War marked the beginning of its long role as a stopping point in the upper Val Seriana.
The dining room at Rifugio Coca serves regional dishes such as homemade ravioli, pizzoccheri, and local cheese from the Alta Val Seriana. These recipes come from the valley's mountain farming tradition and are still prepared in the same way today.
The hut is reached by marked hiking trails from Valbondione, and the ascent takes a few hours depending on the route chosen. Staff on site can help with planning day walks in the surrounding area and can advise on current trail conditions.
A separate winter room with ten beds stays open even when the main building closes for the cold months. This means winter climbers and ski tourers can still find shelter here at a time of year when most huts at this elevation are completely shut.
