Rifugio Savigliano, Mountain shelter in Pontechianale, Italy.
Rifugio Savigliano sits at 1743 meters elevation in the Val Varaita valley and accommodates about 25 guests across eleven rooms, with six having private bathrooms. The shelter is simply equipped but functional, serving as a base for hiking and climbing routes in the surrounding area.
The building was originally constructed as a military structure and served as an outpost in this mountain region. A major renovation in 2020 reduced the number of beds but significantly improved comfort for visitors.
The shelter is run by the Savigliano section of the Italian Alpine Club and serves as a traditional meeting point for climbers and hikers in the area. Visitors experience the local custom of hospitality that defines mountain hut culture in this valley.
Access is via a roughly one-kilometer walk from Pontechianale along a former military road, manageable for most visitors. The shelter operates continuously from June through September and opens on weekends during other months.
The shelter features a climbing gym for beginners where visitors can practice basic skills in a safe setting. This makes the location accessible to less experienced climbers who want to explore mountaineering.
