Shimizu-ku

Shimizu-ku stretches along the coast of Suruga Bay on the Pacific Ocean, encompassing both coastal plains and elevated hills in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture.

The area transformed into an international trading port in 1899, becoming a central point for exporting green tea and managing fishery operations with the United States and United Kingdom.

The district gained national recognition through the manga series Chibi Maruko-chan, created by local author Momoko Sakura, which depicts daily life in the region.

The Port of Shimizu handles container ships and bulk cargo vessels, connecting to multiple transportation networks through modern road and rail infrastructure.

The district maintains five preserved post stations from the Edo period Tōkaidō road, marking historical rest points for travelers between Kyoto and Tokyo.
