Shizuoka Prefectural Central Library, Prefectural central library in Suruga-ku, Japan
Shizuoka Prefectural Central Library is the main public library of Shizuoka Prefecture, located in Suruga-ku, one of the central wards of Shizuoka City. The building spans several floors and houses reading rooms, specialized departments, and a large collection of printed and digital materials open to the public.
The library was founded in 1925, at a time when Japan was actively expanding its public education system. Over the following decades it grew and relocated more than once before settling in its current building in Suruga-ku.
The library has a dedicated section for books and periodicals focused entirely on the Shizuoka region, including local newspapers and regional publications that are hard to find elsewhere. Anyone curious about the history and daily life of the prefecture will find one of the most thorough collections in the area here.
Entry is free and the building provides Wi-Fi along with many workstations for visitors. Coming in the morning usually means finding a spot in the reading rooms without having to wait.
The library has a floor set aside entirely for children, with areas designed specifically for infants, including soft flooring and scaled-down furniture. This makes it one of the few places in the city where families with very young children are genuinely welcome without needing to make any special arrangement.
