Nihondaira, Scenic viewpoint in Shizuoka, Japan
Nihondaira is a hilltop plateau in Shizuoka, Japan, rising to 307 meters and offering wide views of Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay, and the surrounding mountain ranges. The area spreads across gentle slopes with tea gardens and observation points that reveal multiple landmarks on clear days.
The hill takes its name from Prince Yamato Takeru, who according to legend traveled through this area. In 1959 the site received official recognition as a national scenic treasure.
The hillside tea plantations give the plateau its green color and make this region one of the main growing areas for green tea in Japan. Visitors can join workshops from spring through autumn and learn how the leaves are picked and processed.
Travelers coming from Shizuoka Station can take a bus that reaches the plateau in roughly 40 minutes. The site provides parking for around 200 cars, making it easy to arrive by road.
A ropeway links the summit to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and covers the distance in roughly five minutes. During the ride the view opens over Suruga Bay and the coastline.
