Shizuoka, Capital city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan
Shizuoka is a large city in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Honshū, stretching from the coast to the foothills of the southern Alps. The city joins the port of Shimizu, a major fishing harbor, with the administrative center around the main station and residential neighborhoods at the base of the mountains.
The city served as a retreat for Tokugawa Ieyasu in the 17th century after his time as shogun, growing around his residence. After merging Shizuoka and Shimizu in 2003, the modern city took shape, bringing together port and inland areas.
The Tokaido Hiroshige Museum preserves and displays traditional woodblock prints depicting life along the ancient Tokaido Road connecting Edo to Kyoto.
The main station sits in the center and offers access to shops, restaurants, and visitor information points. The Shimizu area can be reached by local trains or buses that run along the coast toward the harbor.
In the Miho area, tea plantations grow right next to pine forests along the shore, and on clear days you can see Fuji across the bay. The area is also known for its fresh fish, delivered daily at the harbor in the early morning hours.
